OPINION
So-called Sovereign citizens write to the Department of Justice and corporate bodies declaring they have removed themselves from any contract with the state and as of that date they are no longer subject to the laws of the land.
Megan Gordon down in Nelson is trying to find a way not to be a worthwhile citizen by not paying her car registration, her local body rates, taxes, dog licence, car registration etc, etc. In other words, she, like all other travellers, is a straight-out “Grifter”. Many bypass the gas or electric power meters and steal the energy as they say they have cancelled all contracts with the state and corporations.
The crazy logic of these Sovereign Citizens when asked for their driver’s licence or challenged by not having a warrant of fitness or car registration is that they say they are outside of the law because they are travellers. Travellers say they have the right of passage without let or hindrance. Well, that might be so in friendly countries, but driving a vehicle whether one is travelling or not still requires a current driving licence.
