Christchurch City Council’s best-paid 57 staff together earn almost $11 million a year – their average salary of nearly $200,000 more than three and a half times that of a typical Kiwi worker.

Senior staff pay has come under scrutiny since it was revealed that around a quarter earn more than $100,000 a year, based on equivalent full-time staffing.

Including part-time staff to reflect the full 2829-strong workforce, that figure falls to one in five.

The council’s payroll bill of $193.5m has leapt from 25 per cent to nearly 40 per cent of its operating costs over the last six years.
