Bill Maher seems to be making a concerted effort to make me like him against my will, and remind the world that there are still sane people on the left. Maher is a tv host and the sort of typical “liberal” “comedian” who mistakes delivering polemics for comedy. Like most of his tribe, Maher has an unfortunate tendency to come across as smug and overbearing. But unlike, say, Trevor Noah or Jim Jeffries, Maher is also not afraid to attack the ludicrous extremes of modern leftism.
Maher has previously castigated “liberals” for their crazy devotion to such idiotic, far-left fantasies as free college, political correctness, social justice warriors, and cultural appropriation. Not to mention the left’s absurd fetish for Islam. Now, he’s attacked the left’s obsessive hatred of Israel.
[Maher said] that the anti-Israel Boycott, Divest, and Sanctions movement, otherwise known as the BDS movement is “bullsh*t purity test” by people who do “slept through history class.”
Despite their self-righteous preening that they somehow have a corner on the “anti-racist” market, the left has almost universally allied themselves with the nakedly anti-Semitic campaign to actually eliminate the Jewish state.
The BDS movement, which has become a staple on college campuses throughout the country, encourages colleges to completely sever any ties they might have with Israel or Israel-linked entities because of Israel’s perceived aggression toward Palestinians. But, as Maher noted Friday on his show, the centuries-old controversy between the Jewish people and the Palestinians is “not a one-way street here […]”
“BDS is a bullshit purity test by people who want to appear woke but actually slept through history class,” Maher said. “It’s predicated on this notion- I think it’s very shallow thinking – that the Jews in Israel, mostly white and the Palestinians are browner so they must be innocent and correct and the Jews must be wrong. As if the occupation came right out of the blue, that this completely peaceful people found themselves occupied. Forget about the intifadas, and the suicide bombings, and the rockets, and how many wars…”
Maher then went on to quote BDS movement co-founder Omar Barghouti who once said that “no Palestinian…will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.” Maher further noted that countries such as Saudi Arabia don’t even allow Jews into their country at all while other Middle East countries’ Jewish populations have dwindled in recent decades, in some cases to fewer than 100.
The BDS slogan, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”, is an explicit call-to-arms to wipe Israel from the map. Israel only exists between the river and the sea. “So that’s where this movement comes from”, noted Maher. “Someone who doesn’t even want a Jewish state at all. Somehow this side never gets presented in the American media.”
What does get attention – and vigorous defence – from the media are the steady stream of anti-Semitic rants from Democrat politicians. Maher pointed to Ilhan Omar’s statements that Israel is “all about the Benjamins” and that “Israel has hypnotized the world. May Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil-doings of Israel”. Despite Omar’s grudging apologies, Maher says, “It’s out there – Jews control the world, Jews control the money”.
“I can see why they don’t get a hero’s welcome,” he continued, referring to Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), both of whom were recently barred from traveling to Israel.
