Yesterday I was awoken by many people messaging me about Nicky Hager getting an ONZM in the King’s Birthday Honours. They were wondering how I felt about that, asking whether or not I was outraged. My answer to them all left them bewildered and astonished.

You see, I wished Nicky Hager well. He has a job to do, and he does it reasonably well, even if he is not particularly effective.

Dirty Politics was in all reality a godsend for me. It was certainly not the fatal and catastrophic end of me that I am sure the left had planned. Even though there were groups on the left who were actively trying, through the constant and unrelenting pressure of that time, to get me to commit suicide. I know who they were and I know who was in those meetings because some people who were present were aghast at what was underway and told me about it.

But Dirty Politics actually made me a better person and a better political commentator. It forced me to assess the toxicity of partisan politics and to cancel my memberships of political parties.

It also propelled me into the stratosphere, from which I’ve never actually come down. It forced changes on me, and the old me ceased to exist, only to be replaced by something bigger and better than before. Our new site traffic is higher now than the old site before Dirty Politics. Our membership on the new site is nearly triple that of the old site. Everything is better.

We and I wouldn’t be where we are today without Nicky Hager. So for that, I thank him.

What is amazing is that I talked about this on Friday on Reality Check Radio, and thanked Nicky Hager, without even knowing that he would be honoured in the King’s Birthday Honours.

Congratulations Nicky Hager, you’ve received an award that wouldn’t have been possible without me, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without your efforts.

Let the games continue …
