Tuesday 17th August, I hear the ding of my phone. Ah yes, of course, a community Covid case. Exactly what we needed. The news started an hour earlier just to make sure everyone got their fix before six. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t turn the TV on. I watched the intense palette of red, white and overarching portraits of the Covid virus, followed by a slideshow of photos from last year’s lockdown.

As I watched I realised that the mainstream media want to evoke as much fear in the minds of as many people as possible. There comes a time where society becomes self-aware so the main job of the news is to hold on to as much control as they can, to have as much influence over as many minds as possible. But it’s starting to flip now.

Last year it was a spectacle; we had been thrust into the moment of a generation, global lockdowns, panic buying, and anxiety on all fronts. The uncertainty was fatal; the fear astronomical. We didn’t know what each day would bring, and whether COVID would be knocking on our door next.

Now let’s fast forward a year. COVID is a joke. Lockdowns have become an inconvenience; the fear has become a nuisance and people have had enough of the constant strain being forced on their lives. But the news still makes anything a story and it’s beyond a joke at this point.

They create a cycle: they report what they believe to be news, and send all their reporters to supermarkets to televise the nationwide panic buying. All this does is make the logical ones, who didn’t start panic buying, get out their reusable bags and run down to the shop.

It makes no sense, and it’s not fair.

Mainstream media will do anything to evoke fear; they’re becoming a puppet of our government. The ratings of the evening news have never been so high and, if you can see the statistics of where they get the most views, it’s whenever they are reporting on anything COVID related.

We have been baited, hooked and reeled in by the mainstream media, and anyone who strays from their narrative is soon to be thrown into the cesspool of COVID deniers or conspiracy theorists. COVID is real, but the fear around it has become a faƧade that is fading fast.
