In response to calls to deplatform keynote speaker, Milli Hill, from her scheduled speech at the biennial conference, the New Zealand College of Midwives (NZCOM) must maintain free speech and open scientific debate by proceeding with the event.
Bullies threatening an authority like Ms. Hill have no place calling for her to be cancelled, says spokesperson for the Free Speech Union, Jonathan Ayling.
“As a bestselling author and global spokesperson for women’s experience of childbirth, Ms Hill has made celebrated contributions to midwifery. The stunts pulled by those who are campaigning for her removal are just another example of a handful of bullies trying to shut down debate and transparent conversation. The NZCOM must stand against it.
“Ms Hill’s so-called ‘transphobic comments’ are a valid perspective based on science and biology. The question of transgender rights and inclusion in pregnancy and birth are important subjects which strike to the heart of identify for many. It is exactly for this reason that all involved in this discussion must preserve free speech.
“The theme of the Conference is “Celebrating Diversity, Growing Stronger Together.” Diversity cannot exist when perspectives are deliberately shut out. Thousands have signed a petition calling for Ms Hill to be cancelled, even more, have signed a petition calling for her to be kept. This highlights the disagreement within this discussion and the need for further debate.
“Deplatforming and excluding on the basis of opinion is no path forward. This is a topic that needs dialogue not further division. By removing Ms Hill, NZCOM would be conceding that only one perspective is allowed and valid. Such a statement would be harmful for women and limit the discussion and learning.”
