From a MOE e-mail sent to all staff yesterday by the Secretary for Education.

[…] [redacted] exemplified the importance and the strength of leadership when asked by the Committee, what stops other schools from not achieving for its Maori students, he said “they just need to make Maori achievement the priority and focus their attention on that”.  He went on to describe how they have normalised Te Reo, made Te Reo compulsory in year 9 and 10 (year 11 next year), are about to make science compulsory and all supported in an environment where identity, language and culture is valued,  the school is strongly connected to whanau and iwi and zero tolerance to failing Maori boys.

[…] We shape an education system that delivers equitable and excellent outcomes
He mea tarai e matou te matauranga kia rangatira ai, kia mana taurite ai ona huanga

If by equitable they mean tolerating a school not failing students based on their race then yeah…seems legit.

Perhaps the writer of this e-mail simply expressed herself poorly and what she said was not what she meant? Perhaps English is her second language?

Then again perhaps it is exactly what it appears to be.
