Time is running out – and the groups who want these anti-speech laws are mobilising support for the hate speech laws. I’m writing to ask for your help to get the message out and recruit like-minded New Zealanders who believe in free speech to have their say.
“I Oppose the Government’s Proposed Hate Speech Laws Because…”
We want to create a series of videos by free speech-supporting New Zealanders like you explaining why you oppose the proposed “hate speech” laws. We’ll use the videos on social media to drive like-minded Kiwis to the petition and submission tool.
Would you be willing to speak on tape (in your phone’s camera is fine) on why you’re opposed to Kris Faafoi’s hate speech proposals?
Video is really effective in getting messages out there. Far more people engage with video on social media than text or pictures alone. That’s why I’m asking for you to make your voice heard.
At the end of this article are some tips. Using your own phone (or having a friend record you) is all we need.

Tips for Making a Short Video:
- Keep it short – 20-45 seconds is ideal
- Speak clearly but naturally, we’re interested in your authentic story, not talking points
- Make the setting is interesting and relevant to you
- For example, a cook would be videoed with their kitchen in the background
- A truck driver could stand in front of their vehicle
- You can video in either portrait or landscape
- Make sure there is no overriding background noise that makes it hard to hear the speaker (If you are outside, make sure there is no wind).
- Make sure there is enough space on either side of the subject’s head in the shot so that the clip can be cropped if needed
- If the subject is too small then don’t zoom in, move closer instead
- Use your phone’s headphones/microphone if that improves the sound
