One of the most undesirable consequences of this whole pandemic episode is not just the illness itself, nor the dismantling of our economy, nor the eternal boredom of the lockdown, nor the unavailability of shopping options, nor the pending ruin of thousands of small and not so small businesses, nor the hundreds of thousands of employees waking up to find they are now unemployed.

It’s much worse than that. It is the excruciating and continuous exposure of an individual who embraces the falsehood that she went “hard and fast” with border control.

Once our country bathed in security and confidence and was being referred to as a “rock star” economy. This state of security was falling apart long before the pandemic hit our shores. The only thing her government ensured was that our demise was accelerated “hard and fast” simply because of her inability to lock down our borders before it became far too late.

Almost every commentator knows this, yet she lives in a state of denial. Every day she stands behind her pedestal, looks us in the eye and tells us she went “hard and fast” on our borders! Well, she didn’t, and there are many documented timelines explaining the falsehood of that claim. But she requires this falsehood to be reinforced on a daily basis to justify the current turmoil our country finds itself in. To admit that she is wrong would be an admission that all of the above chaos referred to in the first paragraph could have been avoided. We are a country surrounded by sea. Those New Zealanders returning home should have been in lockdown for two weeks and all others turned around at the border.
