An announcement from the Azerbaijan government following last week’s Presidential election gave me cause to smile.
The statement bragged about the government’s popularity, reflected by its 85% voter support.
That’s an improvement on the previous Presidential election in which a half-witted official mistakenly issued the “results” the day before people actually voted.
I was so delighted by that at the time, I flew to the capital Baku to take the mickey, in vain as it transpired as no-one greatly cared.
I put that down to a plainly evident life-style contentment, this a reflection of Azerbaijan’s century-long oil wealth. They have much to smile about. Its capital Baku is a lovely city, open air cafes fill the lengthy Caspian Sea waterfront and everyone is visibly happy.
Ostensibly a Muslim country it’s rare to see a mosque. When I raised that with a young Azerbaijan woman, she said when it comes to religion, they use ‘the mosques’ like Britons, that is as traditional venues for weddings and funerals but otherwise, like all well educated people, dismiss religion as historic nonsense.
