Finally Scott Morrison has grown a pair almost as big as Hannah Mouncey’s. For all that he’s stood firm against China on the international stage, there hasn’t been a domestic Culture War issue on which Scotty from Marketing wasn’t prepared to fold like a cheap suit. Whether it’s screeching feminist frightbats, flouncing Liberal “moderates”, or gibbering climate nutcases glueing themslves to roads, Morrison’s has only ever stopped to ask how far they want him to bend over.
At last, though, thanks largely to Tasmanian senator Claire Chandler, Morrison has apparently found something resembling a spine.
All it took was some mentally ill men in dresses smashing up girls on the sports field.
Naturally, the media are lying about it. “Scott Morrison backs bill that will exclude transgender people from sport,” shrieks the headline. Which is absolutely untrue, of course. The bill will allow “transgender” people to play sport — just in the category that matches their biological reality, not their cross-dressing delusions.

The bill in question is the work of Tasmanian senator Claire Chandler, who has been a rare beacon of free speech and defending women’s — actual women’s — rights not to have to share dressing rooms and sports fields with creepy men in makeup.
Campaigning in the Tasmanian marginal seat of Lyons, Mr Morrison said he was happy to back a push by Tasmanian senator Claire Chandler in a private members’ bill to allow sporting groups to exclude trans people from playing women’s sport.
“I support it, as Claire knows. I think it’s a terrific bill and I’ve given her great encouragement,” Mr Morrison said.
“Claire is a champion for women’s sport and I think she’s been right to raise these issues in the way that she has. Well done, Claire.”
His support appears at odds with his written pledge to rebel MPs in December, 2021 that he would act to ensure children were not discriminated against at school on the basis of sexuality or gender.
Except that it’s not. In fact, it’s defending the right of girls not to be discriminated against for the benefit of a vanishingly small group of deluded boys. As Senator Chandler correctly points out, a dodgy, unproven, fringe academic theory is being weaponised in order to punish and marginalise women and girls.
“Under recent interpretations of Australia’s Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (the Act), sporting codes, clubs and volunteers can have legal action taken against them for offering single-sex women’s sport.
This interpretation has been used as a weapon to pressure sporting organisations to allow males to play women’s sport.“The need to separate females and males on the sporting field – in the vast majority of sports – has been understood for decades.”
