What a marvellous victory by the Black Caps, despite both sides missing some of their stars.

As one gets older nationalist sentiments in sport fades and is replaced by underdogism. For example, if the All Blacks lost to Italy I’d be elated.

Lifelong Aussie mates of my vintage tell me they feel the same, BUT, with one exception, and that’s test cricket. Why that should be is a mystery, but it’s certainly also true with me.

So a spectacularly overwhelming away win in England, against England, handing them their first home series loss since 2014, was a hugely spirits-lifting event leaving me very happy.

Has New Zealand ever enjoyed such riches in our bowling attack? I don’t think so.

I’m picking the Black Caps to beat India in the forthcoming world championship series final, thanks to it being played in Britain on pitches suiting our pace-men. Played in India however, would probably be another story.

Our batting line-up in okayish but one wonders, how much longer Ross Taylor will make the team, despite his 80 in the first innings.
