Over the past year, the government has unilaterally changed significant legislation to give itself pretty much unlimited powers.

We have allowed this to happen because of fear. Fear of a virus that highly flawed computer modelling predicted would kill hundreds of millions across the world and up to eighty-five thousand New Zealanders if we did nothing.

With those numbers ringing in our ears, and thousands of deaths in Italy, Spain, Portugal, the United States and the rest of the world, we were fearful of what this virus could do to our country. We pleaded with our government to act to stop it getting a hold here.

A matter of such national and international significance might suggest a realistic expectation that the government would call special sittings of parliament and weigh up the points of view of all elected representatives. They didn’t. They dictatorially, behind closed doors, made decisions not only about how to manage it, but about significant changes to civil rights laws which are still in place a year later.

Look back to March 2020. We had few infections, virtually no deaths and life could have stayed pretty much normal. But even a child could see that if just a few positive cases sneaked in over the still wide open border, we’d be in big trouble overnight. We went from nothing to everything so quickly that my head still spins when I think about it. But we were blessed with incredibly good luck. Exponential growth from the very small number of positive cases that did cross the border did not happen. We dodged the bullet.

In March last year, the fear of the unknown and the scaremongering of the “scientists” pushed government into a unilateral national Level 4 lockdown. The government, with a complete absence of experience or success at anything both before and since coming into office, and with the most inexperienced Prime Minister and caucus in history at the controls, took it upon itself to unilaterally take control and make decisions which included changing civil rights legislation.

We all know what happened over the next twelve months with the daily propaganda pulpit working overtime. Clearly what didn’t happen is what was needed more than anything.

Last week, a lockdown was announced at around 8.30 on Saturday evening and people were free to do whatever they wanted until the following morning at 6 am. Many escaped the borders of the city during that time but suddenly at 6 am – we were all prisoners in our homes again.

Fast forward a week. No positive tests worthy of a mention yet the whole city remains in prison and the whole country’s economy continues to tank. As we rolled into Friday with the news still favourable regarding the spread of the virus, our leaders showed yet again, that they have no grasp of what it means to be in business.

What exactly do they think could happen between 6 pm Friday and 6 am Sunday that hasn’t already happened?

This is just stupid and terribly damaging nonsense from people who are completely clueless and have no skin in the game. For retail and hospitality, Friday and Saturday is the difference between life and death for these businesses.

Until they actually join the team of 5 million and share the pain, they are just more mouthy hypocrites whose decisions are destroying people.

Covid is a mild inconvenience in most cases compared with the toxic, murderous actions of the political and bureaucratic elite.

Until their pay is cut and they have to live on nothing for several weeks themselves, I frankly don’t want to hear from them again.

“Get stuffed” should be the national response.
