Dear Editor

The greens with their cannabis referendum are really showing how out of touch they are with middle New Zealand. They had the chance to bring about a sensible change in the way cannabis is dealt with in New Zealand but had to take it a step too far in proposing to legalise rather than decriminalise it.

I am a supporter of decriminalisation (like they did in Canberra) and making it more easily available (and cheaper) for medical use. I believe they would have succeeded in a referendum if they had gone down this track as they would have been able to sell the proposal to the New Zealand public a lot easier.

This just shows how out of tune they are with the majority in not just this but in a lot of their policies. When you have the hosts on the morning show on Hauraki saying they are not sure about legalisation then you probably have it wrong, as the demographic of this station would be the target market of supporters of the legislation campaign.

It really peeves me that they have blown this opportunity to actually bring in some sensible changes, which now won’t be addressed for a long time due to their failure.
