I, like most of us here on The BFD, have gathered information and knowledge about Coronavirus from numerous sources. I have read an avalanche of material published within medical journals, scientific reports and of course what is fed to us by our local and international media and politicians. I might be considered schooled up by normal standards considering that half the population in New Zealand believes the source of all knowledge is possessed by the PM alone.

From all my readings, the only common factor that appears to have universal agreement, and is statistically overwhelmingly proven, is that the demographic most at risk is the elderly with additional underlying health issues. And sadly this setting has been replicated here.

Those who are younger, ie. under 70, and otherwise in good health, generally make a full recovery. There are exceptions of course, but these exceptions would apply to any health issue. This poses the question: has our response been more akin to panic than sound reasoning?

There are greater intellects than I (with the exception of the PM) who have plotted our course of intervention. But the great divide is medical vs political. I trust the medical fraternity to do what they do, and that is to manage and treat the pandemic. But I do not trust our politicians. I am of the strong belief that the inhumane interventions applied by our politicians are driven by the lust for power and the promotion of ideology. An example is the enforced requirement that loved ones cannot be at the bedside nor at the graveside of the deceased regardless of the cause of death. This is a compassionless decree that is enforced by an insensitive regime in a supposedly civilised free country.

At this moment there are tens of thousands of families whose lives are falling apart as their dignity, security and social status are in tatters. There was absolutely no need to cripple our economy and half the population in the endeavour to contain this virus. By all means protect the most vulnerable, the elderly, and isolate the younger population who become infected; most, if not all, will recover, but life has to go on. It’s not just the economic destruction that will ensue, but tragically, the emotional impact on our people will predictably cause more deaths than the pandemic.

Next time we see our PM’s smiley face telling us to be kind, let’s just dwell on the reality. There was a better way but sadly the path of intervention has evolved from the minds of political simpletons. I expect there are many who will disagree with me, but I don’t care.
