For such an infamously self-obsessed culture, the Hollywood elite exhibit an astonishing lack of self-awareness. These are some of the most privileged people in the world, ensconced in walled mansions that resemble, in Mark Steyn’s words, “Downton Abbey on the beach at Malibu, with Hispanics in place of the doughty English peasantry”. Yet, they actually delude themselves that they are the beloved dispensers of joy and wisdom to peasants who eagerly fawn on their every inane twittering.

In their own words, as writer Lionel Chetwynd relates, they literally tell themselves that they are “engaged in bringing light and happiness into the drab little lives of ordinary people”. Like so many Marie Antoinettes playing milkmaid at Hameau de la Reine, they believe that the peasantry are devoted to their royal highnesses.

But a new poll shows that the peasants aren’t taking kindly to being told to eat cake.

Although actors and actresses garner endless media coverage — and spend a lot of time telling all of us how they feel about President Trump — Americans don’t trust them.

According to a new poll released Tuesday by Morning Consult, just 4% of Americans trust Hollywood. That’s lower than the number that trust Wall Street (5%) and the U.S. government (7%).

The news media comes in at a dismal 8%.

When even the fake news media and the Washington swamp are twice as trusted as Hollywood, they ought to realise that they’re in no position to lecture the public about anything, as Ricky Gervais so bluntly told the Golden Globes audience.

Richie Cunningham recently made a prize ass of himself, by solemnly declaring that Hollywood hates Trump because, they say, he is a “self-serving, dishonest, morally bankrupt ego maniac who doesn’t care about anything or anyone but his Fame & bank account”.

Really, Hollywood? All those mirrors and you’re so clearly incapable of even a modicum of self-reflection?

Well, here’s a dose of hard, cold reality salts: even the most beloved celebrities are barely more trusted than the Bad Orange Man.

But Americans do trust two top celebrities. Tom Hanks came in at 34% and Oprah Winfrey at 27%.

Shockingly (at least to the news media), Trump comes in at 20% on trustability.

That would have to be a blow to their egos – if, in fact, it were possible for anything to pierce the impenetrable wall of celebrity smugness.

After all, these are the same celebrities who, after being told in no uncertain terms “If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a political platform to make a political speech…come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your God — and f*ck off,” proceeded to…use it as a political platform to make political speeches.
