New York’s hipsters just love retro stuff. So much so, that they seem hell-bent on re-living the 1970s, when “Fear City” was a degenerate wasteland of crime.
The number of murders rose in 2019 to 318, the most since 2016, the New York Police Department said in its annual crime statistics report. Robberies, felony assaults and shootings also rose modestly in 2019, while the number of rapes and subway crimes declined.
New York was run by a succession of Democrat mayors from the 70s until the early 90s when its murder rate reached an astonishing peak. Then tough-on-crime Republican Rudy Giuliani took the helm. Murders, which, to be fair, had begun to slightly decline, plummeted. Then New Yorkers voted the Democrats back in.
The declining crime rate and expectations that it will continue figured prominently in de Blasio’s decision nearly two years ago to close the troubled Rikers Island jail complex within 10 years.
De Blasio has also declared that New York is a “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants. Illegals like the MS13 members who brazenly executed a man on a subway platform, in full view of bystanders with cameras. The murder, as it happened, in none other than Alexandra “Abolish ICE” Ocasio-Cortez’s electoral district.
Not all crimes are increasing, of course. Only some curiously specific ones.
Bucking the downward trend was a jump in hate crimes last year, led by a surge in anti-Semitic incidents, which rose 26%. About three-quarters of the incidents involved graffiti, usually painting swastikas on the walls of buildings and vehicles, officials said.

Of course, the leftist narrative is that anti-Semitic hate crimes are all the fault of the evil righties. While there is some small truth that anti-Semitism continues to fester on the right, the big jump in anti-Jewish hate crimes seems to be coming from other quarters. With the left increasingly embracing an anti-Semitic worldview, some are putting their disgusting rhetoric into action.

Now we know why the left argue such illogical nonsense as that “minorities can’t be racist”. It’s far easier to babble inanities like “intersectionality” than admit that white males aren’t the devil incarnate.
