We have been led to believe that until this week, our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern did not know that the serious allegations of assault were of a sexual nature. As with any assertion, we must ask the following: If that is true, what else must be true?

If she didn’t know that the serious allegations of assault were of a sexual nature until this week, then she can’t have known about their sexual nature on the 6th of August when being interviewed by Mike Hosking.

However, Mike Hosking asked her about the allegations, directly referencing the sexual nature of them.

Jacinda must, therefore, have come out of that interview knowing that there was a suggestion that the allegations were of a sexual nature, and knowing that at least one (Mike Hosking) member of the media believed that the serious assault allegations were of a sexual nature.

One would expect that a prime minister, having finished that interview, would want to know if indeed the allegations were of a sexual nature, and how many other people in the media believed that they were of a sexual nature.

One would also expect that if the prime minister enquired as to whether there was any truth to the suggestion that the serious assault allegations were of a sexual nature, and was told ‘No’, that the next response would be “Then why does Mike Hosking think that they are of a sexual nature?”.

On top of that, one would also expect the prime minister to be concerned that the media thought that the allegations were of a sexual nature, when in fact they weren’t.

So, if Jacinda is telling the truth now, then depending on how it panned out after the interview, at least one or more of the following must be true:

  • Jacinda thought nothing of the suggestion by Mike Hosking and took it no further.
  • Jacinda enquired as to the nature of the serious assault allegations, was told they were not of a sexual nature and wasn’t concerned that at least one person in the media thought that they were.
  • Jacinda enquired as to the nature of the serious assault allegations, was told that they were not of a sexual nature, was concerned that someone in the media thought that they were and did nothing to put the record straight.

After careful consideration, I have no difficulty believing that it could have panned out that way. Oh, and by the way, as of Monday, there will be a toll on the Wanarunna Harbour Bridge, which is my latest purchase.
