1987, President Ronald Reagan, in one of his more famous speeches challengers Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down that wall.” Two years later on November 9, 1989, they did.
1975, Indira Ghandi the Indian Prime Minister, is convicted of election fraud during her 1971 election campaign. Amid calls to resign, she imposes martial law to keep the peace and gives the big finger to the people of India. She is swept from office in the 1977 elections.
1942, Anne Frank receives a diary for her 13th birthday, A month later she and her family were in hiding.
1994, Nicole Browne Simpson and Ronald Goldman are murdered.
1942, The first of what would ultimately be 100,000 American servicemen arrive in Auckland for R and R. It would not always be a mutually agreeable experience. Apparently, it gave rise to the phrase, Overpaid, oversexed and over here.
