He Puapua may not mean what we have been told it means.
The authors of He Puapua say that the name ‘puapua’ means ‘break’ but these sketches by Koch show a different meaning; protective padding.
Born in Berlin in 1834, Koch died in Wellington in 1901.
Koch produced the series for a John White. They were based on posed photos of non-Maori people.
