It’s a huge week for New Zealand, as we resume two-way quarantine free travel with Australia. The trans-Tasman bubble helps friends and family reconnect, provides vital customers for tourism operators here, and brings opportunities for New Zealanders doing business in Australia.

Yesterday alone, Air New Zealand flew 3,000 people from Australia to New Zealand and another 2,000 the other way. This bubble is good for our people and good for our economy. And it’s all down to your hard work and support. That’s why my main message today is one of thanks.

The trans-Tasman bubble is open because you stayed home and saved lives. You scanned in to stop the virus. You were kind and flexible when new clusters emerged. The team of five million helped get New Zealand ready to welcome international visitors again. For all those things thank you, thank you, thank you.

In addition to all those efforts, Labour supporters like you did even more. You stood with Jacinda Ardern and the Labour team as they tackled COVID-19 in election year, and you helped Labour win the opportunity to keep moving in a second term.

I’m certain one of the reasons we can welcome Australians back this week is Jacinda’s steady, compassionate leadership. She trusted the incredible people in New Zealand’s science community, and she put people’s health and wellbeing at the heart of every decision. You helped her to do that.

Every time you support Labour, whether it’s at the ballot box, by joining the party or donating to our campaigns, or by talking with your friends and family about the country we all share, you’re helping Jacinda. Thank you, thank you, thank you again.

If you’re welcoming Aussie visitors or heading across the ditch yourself, please enjoy the opportunity that your efforts have given us all. You’ve earned it, and you deserve to enjoy it.

Nga mihi,na
