Thanks to Jacinda Ardern’s decision to lock down New Zealand businesses and destroy the economy, hundreds of thousands of Kiwis are now looking for employment.

As one of those people I have been looking at government jobs. In times like these a government job is one of the most secure as your job is not predicated on your employer being successful at making money.

This week I was shocked to come across an openly discriminatory set of hiring criteria for a main graduate recruitment role for the Ministry of Primary Industries next year.

I realise that having specific or separate roles targeting groups is not all too uncommon within the public sector, but having explicit ethnicity-based criteria for the only graduate role they have seems a bit more “progressive” than usual.

The BFD

Even more shocking is that their discriminatory race-based requirement isn’t even based in reality. It appears that the applicant simply needs to “identify” as Maori or Pasifika.

Since it is currently socially acceptable for a biologically male to “identify” as a woman this bizarre and discriminatory advertisement has opened up a huge can of worms. Where once, racially discriminatory hiring criteria would have successfully excluded the majority of applicants from applying, this one leaves the door wide open for people to “identify” as the desired race in order to be able to apply for the role.

The fact that we have a government department not only racially discriminating but relating race to something that anyone of any race can identify as is gobsmacking! They can’t even get their racism right. The rules of reality and logic have been thrown out the window.
