As predicted by… well, pretty much everyone, Matthew Hooton has started work in the Office of the Leader of the Opposition.

As befits a man known as the Svengali of Right-Wing Politics, he starts his tenure with a statement that is not quite a lie but is deliberately disingenuous.

Mr Hooton (as his closest friends are allowed to call him) says he has accepted a “short term” contract to work for Todd Muller and his team.

Like other Parliamentary staff, he will be on an event-based contract – so basically losing their job when there is an election or a change of party leader. As a result, he will technically lose his job on election day, or even earlier in the unlikely event of another leadership coup.

I guess that justifies calling it a “short term” contract in the media.

However, it is highly unlikely that his contract will not be rolled over by Todd Muller regardless of the election result.

If Muller becomes Prime Minister, Mr Hooton can probably add another zero to the end of his salary. Basically, when Todd is there, Matthew is there.

That has long been the case. Only now, it is official.
