Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters has broken rank with Labour over coronavirus restrictions, saying the country should be at level 1 now.

Peters also said that the trans-Tasman bubble, allowing quarantine-free travel, should also already be operational.

[…]Peters told Newstalk ZB on Wednesday morning that it was his party’s position that New Zealand should be at alert level 1 by now, meaning almost no internal restrictions on normal life.

“We’ve been in compulsory lockdown for far too long,” Peters said.

[…] He said the enemy at this point was not Covid-19, but instead the economic devastation wrought by the disease and the response to it.

He said this view had been made clear to Labour in Cabinet, but it didn’t have the numbers to make it a reality.

For the last five days in a row, no new COVID-19 cases have been reported by the Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield.

Over the entire crisis, there have been only 21 COVID-related deaths which is not the same as death caused by COVID-19. What it actually means is that people died with COVID ( usually along with other life-threatening illnesses)

No-one is currently in the hospital for coronavirus related treatment.
