In a classic Warner Bros cartoon, Sylvester the Cat keeps trying to load an old musket, which keeps blowing up in his face. Each time, Sylvester triumphantly declares, “Now I got it! Now I got it!”…and then – BOOM! Like the hapless Sylvester, the Democrats and their media camp-followers triumphantly declare that this time they’ve got Trump…and then – BOOM!

Perhaps the greatest gift of the Trump presidency is that the mainstream media jig is finally, undeniably up. Everyone has known for decades, in an abstract kind of way, that the mainstream media are lying shills. Now, anyone who is not completely ideologically blinkered knows without a shred of doubt.

History will judge the media’s reporting of the Trump years harshly, and not just for bias but for what former Australian foreign minister Alexander Downer describes as its lack of forensic skill.

Coming on the heels of the failed Russiagate probe, the Democrats’ impeachment strategy over a July 25 presidential phone call will most likely ensure the re-election of the President […]

As Pulitzer Prize winner Glenn Greenwald explained when the Mueller report was released, the idea that Trump was conspiring with Russia is stupid: “How can you say Donald Trump is a stooge of the Kremlin when […] he is trying to remove one of Putin’s client regime states in Venezuela […] when he’s trying to bully Angela Merkel out of buying Russian natural gas […] when he sold lethal arms to the Ukrainians […] when he bombed Putin’s client state in Syria […] This whole narrative that Trump is being blackmailed by Putin is idiocy.”

Note that Greenwald sits on the left of the political spectrum. This is not the gibbering of some Daily Stormer alt-righter. Greenwald represents the last remaining shreds of dignity and integrity on the contemporary left.

Unfortunately, the rest of the pack of howler monkeys of the left-media (in other words, the media) have abandoned anything they might have actually known about critical reasoning, let alone journalistic curiosity. Instead, they’re just hooting and flinging faeces at the bad orange man shaking their tree.

Like the rest of Russiagate, the “Downer connection” is a whole lot of nuthin’ at all. That hasn’t stopped the local media from breathlessly fantasizing.

Much of the reporting was breathless here last Tuesday as journalists rehashed a piece from The New York Times revealing Trump had asked Prime Minister Scott Morrison for help in Barr’s probe of Australia’s role in the original FBI investigation of claims Russia had dirt on Hillary Clinton […] Papadopoulos even suggests Downer may be some sort of agent for the Clintons. This is beyond stupid.

What is particularly notable is that every time the media think they’ve got it this time, they pack it down real hard and…BOOM! The Podesta phishing exposed the DNC’s dirty tricks to grease Hillary’s orange-peel ass into the nomination. Russiagate exposed the Obama government’s spying on the Trump campaign and the Democrats’ dealings with shady security firms. The Ukraine kerfuffle has turned the rock over on the Biden family’s sleazy shenanigans. The FBI, the DOJ and the media have all been exposed as lying, partisan hacks.

In the interests of good government it must be hoped the Barr investigation gets to the bottom of the politically motivated manipulation of media by partisan intelligence sources, many now working at US news networks.

While I don’t believe in conspiracies, reforming politicians understand bureaucracies resist change. This column has previously quoted president Dwight Eisenhower: “We must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence.”

[…] Or as prominent civil libertarian lawyer Alan Dershowitz, an opponent of impeachment, has written, the legal and intelligence systems should never usurp the ballot box.

Like Greenwald, Dershowitz is a principled leftist. As such, he probably also realises that the impeachment process will keep Trump easily in the White House in 2020.

Because the Republican-controlled Senate will veto impeachment and in the process Trump’s lawyers will have the right to interview anyone they like connected to allegations investigated, including Hillary Clinton, Christopher Steele, James Clapper, John Brennan and James Comey. All under oath.
