Donald Fagen, keyboardist and lead singer for Steely Dan, wrote these lyrics referencing Ray Charles who liked the ladies and had a reputation for getting the “sugar”.

A section of Donald Fagen’s lyrics to “What I do” performed by Steely Dan

Plenty of men find that money, power or success secures the “sugar” from willing women – there is nothing new here, and at the same time few complaints either, although a few decades after the event Donald Trump or Jeffrey Epstein might find themselves being hit up for money from a woman with a recent change of heart who fell on harder times.

It might be in his DNA but unfortunately, a man whose DNA furnishes him a similar sex drive, but who does not provide any compensating benefits, might find women have a much lower appreciation of his “bad self” than he does. One such “bad self” and pursuer of “sugar” is a Labour Party staffer.

“Newshub can reveal the Labour Party has been forced to review an internal investigation into bullying, sexual harassment and sexual assault by a Labour staffer.

“It follows complaints the investigation process was botched and traumatising for the alleged victims.

At least four people have resigned from official party roles and cancelled their membership as a result.

Can Labour get anything right? They botched their own internal investigation (no pun intended), leaving complainants unhappy because this dude is still at large, because the party decided not to take disciplinary action. Just how important to Labour is this guy?

Unhappy with Labour’s handling of their complaints, Radio NZ reported that the complainants went to the media and the National Party, forcing Labour into action.

In an act of damage control on Monday evening, Labour’s ruling council announced “a confidential appeal process” would be set up and funding provided for legal advice.

[…]The party’s council – which includes Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern – met over the weekend, and Labour president Nigel Haworth issued a statement on Monday.

Mr Haworth said the council had agreed to the complainants’ request that an independent appeal process be put in place.

Ensuring the appeal is done by an independent expert who is at arm’s length from the Party is important for building trust in the process in the future.”

A case of better late than never, but could Haworth have uttered Labour’s understatement of the year? Possibly not, because this is their year of delivery and they are blessed with a part-time PM and ministers who constantly come up short, so undoubtedly there is more to come. Have they resolved their youth camp sexual harassment fiasco yet?

Botching your own investigation smacks of immorality, and failing to satisfy the complainants is arrogance indeed. Let’s see Labour successfully wallpaper over this chaotic chasm.
