The historical legacies of American presidents are always hard to assess during their time in office. With hindsight, presidents who were popular in office are subjected to a more jaundiced historical assessment. Richard Nixon was consistently popular until the last year of his presidency. Harry Truman’s popularity plunged to some of the lowest ratings recorded, yet he is consistently rated in the Top Ten of the presidency. Barrack Obama had solid approval ratings in office – just three years later, he is ranked as middling at best.
That ranking seems likely to sink further with the march of time. The gloss of his presidency is fading fast. Even Democrats, who have insisted that Obama is little less than a god among men, are starting to ask tough questions about their former golden idol.
A new poll from CNN is bad news for Obama and the Democratic Party. With the Mueller report complete and the Russian collusion narrative collapsed, Americans seem ready to move on.
“The American public increasingly feels that Democrats in Congress are going too far in investigating the President,” CNN reports. “44% say Democrats are doing too much on that score, up from 38% saying so in March. That shift stems largely from independents, 46% of whom now say congressional Democrats are going too far.”
Interestingly, this poll was taken before the Democrats spectacular fit of sour grapes, attacking Attorney General William Barr – even though Mueller stated that Barr’s summary of his report was accurate.
But Americans aren’t just fed up with hearing about fake “Russian collusion”, they’re also starting to ask for a long, hard look at the people behind the whole, pointless exercise. That trail leads directly back to Obama.
“69% think Congress ought to investigate the origins of the Justice Department’s inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 election, including 76% of Democrats, 69% of independents and 62% of Republicans.” In other words, an overwhelming majority of Americans believe that the Obama Justice Department’s actions in 2016 should be investigated. The American people want answers about the Steele dossier, the FISA court approval of the wiretap, everything. What did Obama know, and when did he know it? Why did the Obama administration not do more to prevent or stop Russian cyber attacks?

It should be especially noted that Americans’ suspicion is bipartisan. In fact, more Democrats want Obama’s DOJ investigated.
A poll of random adults is really only useful in looking at trends, and this poll shows that the trends are almost all moving in Trump’s direction. Exceptions are that 48 percent believe Trump obstructed justice, while 45 percent disagree. Fifty percent believe “things Trump has said publicly about the investigation have been mostly false.”
That 69 percent number, though, that is the real news here. What we have, even during these polarized times, is the unified belief the Department of Justice needs to be investigated, which is exactly what Attorney general Bill Barr and Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC) have promised to do, which is why the media are already working overtime to smear Bill Barr.
This is all to Trump’s favour. The numbers are already trending his way and, as we saw with Bill Clinton, a president perceived to be under siege by the Washington machine is rewarded with improved polling. The more that is revealed about the Obama administration’s abuses of power, the better it will be for Trump – and worse for Obama’s legacy.
It’s also poised to be yet another judgement on the legacy media.
That 69 percent number is also a massive media fail. For two years the media have been lying to the public hoping to convince us Obama’s Department of Justice did nothing wrong (they did), did not act improperly (they did), did not spy on the other party’s presidential campaign (they did), did not wiretap the other party’s campaign (they did).. But as you can see here, even Democrats haven’t been convinced by that fake news.
