When so-called ‘liberals’, most of them very wealthy and very, very white, babble about “defunding” and abolishing the police, it’s tempting to let them go right ahead.
Let’s go all Escape from New York on their asses. Build a big wall around Democrat cities like Minneapolis and Los Angeles and withdraw all police. Nobody gets in, nobody gets out. It will be the ultimate test of leftist utopia.
Just make sure to livestream the whole thing and have plenty of snacks handy.
Except that we’ve seen this show already. In fact, it’s been on high rotation for weeks. When rioting spread across America from Minneapolis, Democrat-run cities responded by pulling police and giving the rioters free rein.
Consider the decision of Mayor Jacob Frey and Police Chief Medaria Arradondo to surrender and abandon the 3rd Precinct. As police cars pulled out and the cops fled, the exhilarated rabble invaded, pillaged and burned the precinct.
And America saw, in astonishment, a triumph of anarchy[…]
Now, consider the political coloration of Minneapolis.
Frey, who ordered the surrender, is a far-left Democrat. Gov. Tim Walz is a liberal Democrat, as are both U.S. senators including Amy Klobuchar. Minneapolis Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is a soul sister of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Minnesota was the political home of Vice Presidents Hubert Humphrey and Walter Mondale and Senators Eugene McCarthy and Paul Wellstone, liberal icons all. The state has not voted Republican for president since 1972. Even Ronald Reagan never carried Minnesota.
All of which begs the question: why is the supposed “systemic racism” which supposedly motivated the riots (rather than, as our lyin’ eyes seemed to suggest, brutal opportunism to grab a few free TVs and sneakers) such a problem in such a Democrat stronghold?
Of his home state, this citadel of liberalism, Walz said last week, “Systemic racism must be addressed if we are to secure, justice, peace and order for all Minnesotans.”
Query: How does “systemic racism” permeate a blue state dominated for decades by liberal Democrats? What explains the failure of Democrats who have long run Minnesota to root out racism?
Why have liberals failed to exorcise racism where they rule? Are even good Minnesota liberals infected with the virus?
And, of course, it was the much-vilified police who eventually made the streets of Minneapolis safe for its citizens. However, they were not allowed to do so before the murders of the likes of David Dorn, himself a former police officer. A respected pillar of the black community, Dorn vainly tried to protect at least one business from looters. He paid for his steadfastness with his life.
‘Peaceful protesters’ who claimed to care very much for black lives couldn’t have cared less about Dorn’s black life. No one helped the dying black man, not even the person who filmed his life ebbing away.
On the fifth night of rioting, looting and arson in Minneapolis, the criminal elements were driven from the streets.
By whom? By the same cops who had been the constant objects of media derision and mob hatred.
Without the thin blue line, far larger sectors of dozens of America’s cities would be in ruins, burned to the ground by the mobs that showered police and their vehicles with rocks, bricks, bottles, Molotov cocktails and any debris that could be thrown at them[…]
Wherever they had to draw back or pull back, anarchy ensued.
What has really failed black America is not imaginary ‘systemic racism’, but post-60s liberalism.
What we witnessed this week in Minneapolis is a failure of liberalism[… liberal] leadership sat morally and politically paralyzed[…]
As a result of their incompetence or cowardice, the custodians of the lovely city of Minneapolis let her be gang-raped by a criminal mob.
Even comparison to the riots of the late 60s are more telling that the American left will admit. Those riots followed the passage of the Civil Rights and Voting Right Acts and LBJ’s “Great Society” welfare programs.
As the much-maligned Nixon said, They seem to blame everybody for the riots but the rioters themselves.
But, hey, it will work next time. All it needs is more leftism.
Well, let’s give it to them. Defund the police and pass the popcorn.
