Government COVID-19 Response Briefing

Ministry of Health Update:

  • 78 new cases
  • 73 new, 5 new probable cases
  • Total cases is now 283
  • 27 recovered
  • 7 in hospital, 3 Wellington, 2 Nelson, 1 Waikato
  • 2417 test processed yesterday, 12683 total tests, average daily tests 1400
  • Marist College and World Hereford Conference, a Wellington wedding, a organised group trip to US, a rest home in Hamilton and Ruby Princess visit to Hawkes Bay are likely clusters
  • 11 linked to Marist College
  • Plan to make PPE available for medical staff and essential workers like supermarket workers.
  • 600 more PPE sent to DHB’s today, but we are manufacturing 200k per day, he said.
  • Pharmac changes effective 1159 this evening. No problem with supply chain.
    • Limit dispensing to 1 month supply, 3 months supply for contraceptives

Police Update:

  • Tarrant guilty verdict covered. Praise for Police and prosecution.
  • Day 1 – responding to level 4. Majority of Kiwis complying.
  • Consequences of non-compliance is avoidable deaths
  • Discretionary approach with warnings and challenges. People need to comply
  • Explains how people are met at the borders.
    • Triaged
    • Any symptoms, immediate quarantine at hotels
    • If you have a plan or place to go you will be assisted to get there
    • Only 1 person may greet people and take them to self-isolation. Police will enforce this.
    • 360 processed at border. 8 had symptoms, now in quarantine. 168 with no plans for isolation temporarily detained for processing.
  • Many people stopped by Police said they had no idea of the Level 4 requirements. Names and details being recorded for repeat offenders.
  • Police will prosecute serious and prolific breaches.
  • Stop driving around. Stay home to stay alive.
