The biggest, most inconvenient skeleton in the EU’s closet is that it was formed with the explicit intention of stopping Germany making war on the rest of the continent.

The genesis of the EU began even before WWII was ended, with a proposed “Coal and Steel Union” which would effectively deny any one nation (stage whisper: that meant Germany) access to war-making material. Europe was, after all, still burning from the third outbreak of furore Teutonicus in less than a century.

So, how’s that worked out for them?

Today, with not a shot fired, Germany (in company with France) is the imperial master of Europe. The present Franco-German empire is on the verge of finally consuming Britain — the womb of Western liberty and democracy that twice resisted Germany — with the help of its progeny nations.

Britain’s precious liberty and national sovereignty are in danger of being legislated away if Brexit fails.

The arrogant ingratitude of Europe in its Brexit dealings with Britain cannot be overstated. Britain is, after all, the nation which within living memory stood all-but-alone in saving Europe from itself. Today, Europe, the aggressors of World Wars One and Two especially, are rewarding Britain with contempt. Those tremors in the green fields of France are two generations of Britons turning in their war graves.

This Vichy propaganda postcard from WWII could just as well be about Brexit.

The mockery of the EU leadership that has attended the negotiations so far should be a warning.

It is beyond belief that the politico-economic submission that will follow is well-known and understood by those who want Britain to stay in the EU despite its desperately chilling and submissive intentions — and with worse to come.

The present leadership of Europe is formulating a more comprehensive range of new powers. The goal is a centralised system that will advance the authoritarian overlordship it has in mind.

The second most inconvenient skeleton in the EU’s closet is sovereignty. Sovereignty is the exclusive, indivisible right of a state to be the supreme law-making power within its territory. The importance of that cannot be overstated, because it goes to the heart of the EU project.

Either the member states of the EU are sovereign, or they are not. It is impossible by definition for a state to be partially sovereign. If the EU is itself a sovereign, then its member states are not. They are puppet states.

For most of its history, the EU has avoided this issue. But, now it appears that the EU – or at least, Germany – has made up its mind.

In November, former German defence minister Ursula von der Leyen will assume the presidency of the European parliament for a five-year term […]

[…] She calls for “a change in rules so that the EU could act even without the unanimous consent of EU member states” and asserts: “To be a global leader, the EU needs to be able to act fast. I will push for qualified majority voting to become the rule in this area.”

And further — and perhaps most ominous of all — she intends to ensure the primacy of EU law over the national laws of EU states.

In other words, the EU will be the imperial master of Europe – and guess who will be running the imperium? For the first time in 1000 years, Britain will be the servant of a foreign master.

The dream of Bismarck, Hohenzollern and Hitler are at last being realised.
