Let me start by apologising to those competent current and former members of our police force (we have a couple in the BFD community) but it seems that there is not much that the police manage to do these days to give us all confidence in their ability to keep the public safe. From allowing someone to walk into the Palmerston North police station and steal 11 guns, to an officer singing lullabies to illegal protestors at Ihumateo, to them harassing law abiding citizens over their firearms… the police public image has not been a very good one lately.

Well, it just got worse.

A man is on the run after ramming two police cars, stealing one, then making off on foot with two stolen guns.

Police said they tried to stop a vehicle in Gore, Southland, shortly before midnight on Wednesday.

The driver rammed a police car, then stole the vehicle and rammed into another police car before fleeing on foot.

Two police Glock handguns were taken from the stolen patrol car, police said.

STUFF

Oh dear. Remind me exactly why the police are in charge of collecting and disposing of illegal firearms when they can’t even look after their own?

It reminds me of a favourite joke from the late Ronnie Barker – “Thieves broke into the (Palmerston North) police station and stole 2 toilets.

Police have nothing to go on.”

Do you all feel safer now, knowing that those terrible, semi-automatic weapons are off the streets, even though gangs still own them, (because gangs, of course, have not been handing theirs in, and no one seems to be willing to confront them over it) and the police cannot secure confiscated weapons, or even keep their own guns safe?
