The government has shoved mask-peddling for students back onto schools. What have they said and what are your rights?

“The government has changed its position on masks in schools, again – now informing schools they should “enforce a mask wearing policy” for students year 4 and above.
Associate Minister Jan Tinetti has “sent a letter informing school boards outlining the Government’s strong recommendation to review and enforce a mask wearing policy as much as practicable”.”
Let’s take a look at what the guidance actually says…
- It’s a “strong recommendation” NOT a mandate.
- The recommendation is in place for the first 4 weeks of Term 3.
Exemptions & Enforcement
“However, this time the onus will be on schools to develop their own enforcement rules – and consequences for anyone who doesn’t comply.”
From the Ministry of Education newsletter:
“For any child or young person who is failing to comply with the school policy (who is not exempted), you will be able to apply or agree your own school policies to manage this behaviour, in the same way you might enforce sun hat and sunblock rules and uniform rules.”
- Remember: Schools are still bound by the law. If students qualify for an exemption and choose to use it they are operating within the law.
