Green Party delegates have voted James Shaw out as co-leader. “This is obviously a bit of a surprise. I’ve got to work through a few things,” he said.
James Cockle challenged Shaw at the 2021 AGM, but he retained his leadership. At the beginning of this year, it was reported that (former co-leader) Russel Norman called Shaw’s climate position “simply not credible”, and activists have left the party:
They accuse co-leader Shaw of having an autocratic style and complain that the party executive is not holding the caucus and leadership to account over policy decisions in government.

Shaw became Green Party co-leader in 2015 after Russel Norman retired. The party re-confirms its leaders each year at the AGM. There will be another vote within five weeks to select a co-leader to stand with Marama Davidson. Shaw can still stand for consideration and his portfolios, notably Minister for Climate Change, are not affected.
