Dear Editor

The article by Thomas Coughlan notes (NZ Herald October 22) that the former Maori Party President Pem Bird has been quoted in Parliament as calling for more vaccine choice in his community rather than just the Pfizer vaccine.

Perhaps this is because re-infection can occur with this vaccine or perhaps because of the reported adverse reactions.

Other countries have taken a different approach using repurposed ivermectin for Covid treatment, a drug currently not recommended by Medsafe for Covid use in New Zealand. However, ivermectin has been reported to have been remarkably successful in controlling the huge outbreak of the Covid virus in India.

Ivermectin has also successfully controlled the Covid virus in Japan. Perhaps it’s time to review its use here.

New Zealand needs treatments that are safe and effective to limit the spread of Covid.
