There is something deeply unnatural, I have always thought, about people who hate the land of their birth. In my various wanderings abroad I have occasionally come across such misfits: the American in Japan who spurned his nationality so thoroughly that he blanked any fellow countrymen he ran into, a Brit in a Thai pub who without any prompting began a beery litany of the sins of the British Empire and the supposed evils of his homeland.
