The hedgehog, it is said, knows One Big Thing. Hedgehogs are monomaniacal thinkers: from the religious extremist, to the Marxist, to the QAnon conspiracist, they believe in a single, all-encompassing explanation for the world.

To the religious extremist, God/Allah/Jehovah is the answer to everything. For the Marxist, everything is about economic class conflict.

Hedgehog thinking is the ultimate intellectual stagnation. Once a hedgehog curls into its protective ball, it is totally closed off to any other explanation.

The biggest, most colossal, overwhelming One Big Thing for the American left is race.

It’s been that way since at least the 1950s, when a generation of pampered white kids went to college and discovered that black Americans back then got a really raw deal. Racial politics was the monomania of the radical American left from the 1960s on. Forget communism and the Vietnam War, violent leftist radicals like the former Weather Underground remain adamant: “It was always about the blacks”.

And that’s the problem: rolled tight into a ball of monomania, the left can’t let go of the One Big Idea of racism. That’s why “racism” is their go-to argument. It’s the original sin that divides the world into good and evil. Naturally, the left are convinced they are the sole good, hence, everyone opposed to the left must be racist, because they’re bad.

So the One Big Idea the American left can’t let go of is race: the instant they admit that America has long ago left behind the 1950s, let alone the 1860s, their entire world-view collapses.

Americans need to desanctify the subject of race—to mute its claims, which have grown absolutist and, as it were, theological in their thoroughness, their dogmatism.

Critical race theory has spread across the U.S. like—forgive the expression—a virus, coming to infect primary schools and high schools and universities, foundations, art museums, big corporations, the military, local, state and federal government bureaucracies. It’s everywhere in the West Wing.

The only problem with CRT is that it’s a lie (a racist lie, at that). America has long ago left behind all but the faintest traces of societal racism. “Systemic racism” is a frank myth.

It was said in the era of Joe McCarthy that he and his followers saw a communist under every bed. The single-minded ideology of critical race theory sees racism in every white face—a racism systemic, pervasive, inescapable, damning. All white people are racists. The doctrine devolves to the crudest form of what might be called racial Calvinism: Americans are predestined—saved or damned, depending on the color of their skin. This doctrine merely reverses the theory of white supremacy, which damned black people—and consigned them to oppressive segregation—because of the color of their skin.

Having closed their eyes, ears and minds to any explanation of the world but race, the American left have no option but to pretend that America is all about racism. It was, the ludicrous 1619 Project declares, contrary to all evidence, the foundation of America.

The hedgehog’s trajectory may begin on the side of undeniable and important truth—for example, the truth that slavery was a great wickedness in America (as it was elsewhere in the world), and that race prejudice has been a chronic American dilemma and a moral blight that has damaged and scarred the lives of millions of black American citizens over generations.

All true—a truth to be acknowledged and addressed.

But note that all of those are in the past tense. America was, maybe, once as bad as the race hustlers insist (and even that is challenged by historical fact), but not any more. It’s telling that everything the race-obsessed left posit as proof of “systemic racism” – “redlining”, for instance – was abolished a half-century or more ago. The rest – police “hunting” black men – is a blatant lie.

A problem solved, though, is an existential crisis for an activist. Once the American left admitted that racism in America is a ghost, their world would collapse – and a great many of them would be without a job or an income. Why fund, say, the NAACP, or the innumerable parasites of the race-hustle, if they’re simply obsolete?

Instead, the American left simply doubles down.

Critical race theory, protesting the old injustice, embraces its lie. This is not progress but revenge. The motive is not justice but payback, lex talionis—an understandable, if Balkan, impulse[…]

Critical race theory ends by fostering the evil it professes to combat—racism and the hatred that comes with it.

CRT claims to be “anti-racist” – but that claim must be understood in the light of CRT in order to embrace its true evil.

According to CRT, all whites are racist. Born racist, live indelibly racist, even “unconsciously” racist – and die racist.

Thus, to be “anti-racist” one must be anti-white.

And that’s… drum roll… racist.
