Rose Byrne is about to get political in her latest role.

The Australian actress, 41, has been cast as New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in upcoming film They Are Us.

Fans will see a different side of the Bridesmaids star as she plays the political leader in the wake of the tragic 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings.

Guled Mire, an advocate for Muslim New Zealanders, said when he was alerted to news of the film, he thought it was someone trolling him.

“I thought it was some kind of satire, I couldn’t believe it.”

He said the film should be shut down, saying it was “absolutely insensitive” and “feeds into this problematic white saviour mentality”.

“Jacinda Ardern’s response in those initial days was commendable from an international perspective, but the bar is very low,” said Mire, who currently lives in the US. “Actually the response has not been close to being great.”
