Just face it, people: they are never going to let go.

Authoritarians never give up an ounce of power voluntarily. The Wuhan plague has gifted absolute power to an army of Little Hitlers. Having got used to ordering entire populations about on a whim, they’re not about to be dragged, kicking and screaming, from the sweet, sweet scent of untrammeled power.

If you don’t believe me, consider the vaccine rollout. This, we have been told for the last 18 months, was the magic key. Only once a vaccine was developed could we return to the pre-COVID normal.

Well, not one, but a plethora of vaccines have been developed and rolled out. In the UK, 94% of over-50s (who make up the vast majority of COVID cases) have been vaccinated. 60% of all adults have.

Yet the UK still remains under heavy restrictions. Masks – the most obvious sign of compliance with pandemic dictatorship – are still mandatory in most settings.

In the US, Anthony Fauci finger-wags Americans that, even if they’re fully vaccinated, they’re still shouldn’t go to restaurants or bars.

They’re never going to let go.

Australia is no better.

So now Australians know the bottom line: regardless of the coronavirus vaccination drive the country will remain a hermit enclave.

Health minister Greg Hunt gave a chilling message on Tuesday: “Vaccination alone is no guarantee that you can open up. If the whole country were vaccinated, you couldn’t just open the borders.”

Which begs the question: what are the benchmarks to re-open and allow Australia to be part of the wider world?

Don’t expect the COVID dictators to come straight out and tell you. Like all authoritarian regimes, one of their tools of control is ever-changing, unpredictable “rules”.

If a country actively banned its citizens from leaving with aggressive Border Force questioning and rules; closed its borders to its own citizens trying to return home by way of punitive quotas, leaving tens of thousands stranded, many penniless and most utterly desperate, despite a willingness to undergo quarantine, we would immediately think of democratic-backward North Korea, not freedom loving, free-spirited Australia[…]

Australians appear to think they have the coronavirus threat under control, but the reality is the country is under one giant lockdown.

The Australian

When the pandemic first peered over the horizon from Wuhan, a friend wondered what would happen in Australia. “Will they declare martial law?” she asked. I scoffed. There has never been martial law declared in our history. The constitution only allows the Governor-General to call out troops to maintain order, if requested by a state Governor, because “domestic violence exists in that State”.

I seriously underestimated the COVID dictators.

I’m not about to make the same mistake again, and start thinking they’ll ever take their boots off our necks.

They’re never going to let go.
