Carbon emissions would drop significantly if cattle were not replaced when they die and tree felling was made illegal, says Dr Paul Winton, an investment adviser who has specialised in climate change.
The Gisborne region had to think of transformational ways to reduce carbon emissions, he said.
“A way to solve the problem overnight is by letting all the cattle die.
“You don’t need to kill them, just don’t replace them when they die,” he said.
“Another solution that could happen is tree felling (forestry) could be made illegal.
[…] “You need to de-carbonise transport by 2030, you need to make petrol and diesel functionally extinct by 2030,” Dr Winton said.
[…] “You hear a lot of talk about net zero 2050 which is complete nonsense. This battle is won or lost in the next five to 10 years.”
