If I was in charge of the National party my instructions around strategy would be to keep Judith in there for at least the next two years, as she is a very good opposition leader, with the plan being to bring in someone fresh for the last year, or if Judith’s numbers have improved then she gets to contest the leadership contest. National needs a fresh face, not some recycled MP whose turn it is to have a go.

In two years time, people will be looking for a change. We will have gone through some tough times and knowing this government’s competence there will be plenty of opportunities to let them muck things up. Judith with the team will be able to land some good hits and then a new vibrant opposition leader with a positive message will be a breath of fresh air and give voters something new to focus on. What the National Party needs to find is their David Seymour and no I am not meaning Luxon should be automatically selected as we have yet to see anything from him

What I have come to understand about people, and this is not just voters but also leaders in business, is that while they talk about three and five-year plans, most of the time they focus on the here and now, and I think this applies to voters. Parties can talk about all the things they are going to do in the future, when really what the voters respond to is what’s happening in their lives today, which is why the Labour party have done so well with Jacinda and had very little talk about grand plans.

The National party if they are to succeed need to put their internal fighting behind them and put together an internal plan for the next three years, which makes the best use of the people they have available. This is how the Labour party did it by installing Jacinda. She may not be the greatest leader and the team around her may not have much depth to them, but the party understood that she is their ticket to election and re-election.
