FORMER Race Discrimination Commissioner, Tim Soutphommasane, took to Twitter to share an opinion published in the Sydney Morning Herald this week by leftist academic Osmond Chiu. When he’s not writing incredibly whiney fluff, Chiu does research for a ‘progressive’ think tank.
The BFD. Osmond Chiu is a research fellow at Per Capita, a progressive think tank.
As race baiters do, the pair chose to be offended that Liberal Senator Eric Abetz (Tasmania) had invited Chiu to explicitly condemn the Chinese Communist dictatorship.
The Energiser Bunny of perpetually-offended victims hyperventilated that being asked to condemn human rights abuses was “McCarthyist racism”.

What’s so hard about that, you may well ask.
Well to a leftist racist, everything is about race. That’s why they accuse everyone they disagree with — on any point — of being ‘racist’, without the slightest ounce of evidence or relevance to the topic at hand.
The only evidence this likely pair needed to clutch their pearls in gasps of horror was that an ‘old white male’ had asked an Australian with Chinese heritage if he could muster the courage to condemn the CCP.
In their facile contortions: if the humans rights abusers were Chinese and the witness before the Senate Committee was Chinese, the only possible motive in Senator Abetz’ mind must have been racial correlation.
Never mind that the very first line Chiu wrote to the Committee included the racially-hostile assertion that “Australian politics is too white”.
Senator Abetz understood that ‘progressive’ Chiu was primarily concerned with identity politics, the irrational preoccupation of leftist demagogues with race and ethnicity, as opposed to ideas & policies — the proper preoccupation of politics.
Senator Abetz explained further:
“Criticism of a dictatorship that holds one million people of an ethnic minority in concentration camps and unapologetically commits a wide range of human rights abuses has nothing to do with race and everything to do with values. [Mr Chiu] was willing to criticise Australia on the basis of colour but not condemn China on the basis of values.”
Osmond Chiu wrote in his complaint:
“I have sometimes wondered how people felt when they were dragged in front of the House Committee on Un-American Activities with Congressmen demanding that they prove their loyalty. Never did I imagine I would be placed in a similar situation.
I spoke to the committee about the underrepresentation of multicultural communities in Australian politics. Australia’s Parliament is significantly less representative of cultural diversity than Canada, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.”
There is that preoccupation with race. What leftists seem disturbed by is a lack of representation. That’s their words. I have wonderful news which can quickly salve their aggravated wound: there is no lack of representation.
Each state is comprised of federal and state electorates which each popularly choose — via one of the best, most liberal and inclusive electoral systems in the world — a representative for every citizen, resident and visitor in their electorate. These representatives gather in a Parliament and together vote on law to faithfully serve everyone.
What grievance-politics activists prefer to complain about isn’t really a lack of representation of various minorities, but a lack of reflection. Again, these hard-to-credit-as-well-meaning folks are confusing ideas (the proper business of politics) with identities.
Incidentally, little Timmy (and I refer to his stature not physically but emotionally, lest he vainly imagine that also to be racist) attempted a weak jibe at German-born Abetz:
“Put it this way: we don’t ask Australians with German ancestry to unequivocally condemn Nazi Germany.”
To which, Senator Eric Abetz responded:
“Numerous times throughout my life I have been asked this question [to be loyal to Australia because you were born in Germany]. I am still questioned about it to this day especially by left-wing operatives.”
Will someone please place a link in the comments to the SMH editorial where Senator Abetz subsequently engaged in the navel-gazing exercise of bemoaning the invitation to condemn evil?
Chiu wrote:
“It felt like a gotcha loyalty test, an attempt to goad me, reducing me to a foreigner who needed to show which side I was on.”
It was a test, Osmond — and you failed. You didn’t even comprehend the question, such is your distractibility by imagined racists everywhere. It wasn’t about your physical ethnicity, but your political toxicity, evidenced by your first thought in your written submission. The answer you gave contextualised the rest of your testimony.
The McCarthy hearings were prescient in their anticipation of the infiltration of institutions by radical leftism, in abundant evidence today. That’s not the greatest irony in this story though.
What is remarkable is the speed with which those leftists signal their divisive agendas with demagogic, reckless, and unsubstantiated accusations, as well as public attacks on the character or racial attitudes of political opponents.
“Racists under the beds!” McCarthyism indeed.
