Dear NZ Politicians and NZ Media,

You keep telling us that we have to continue with the policy of elimination.  That we have to continue to make sacrifices because it’s best for the economy. You tell us that it’s because the virus is so dangerous and we’ll be killing someone if we don’t isolate cases, if we don’t wear masks and if we don’t social distance ourselves. The “team of 5 million” must keep moving forward you tell us.

Some of us never agreed that lockdowns or isolation was the answer.

Among all of those who did, they thought it was to “flatten the curve.” They thought it would be a few days initially. Maybe a week, or two.

They never in their wildest dreams imagined it would go on for weeks and become a never-ending policy that is destroying the economy, ruining lives and violating basic human rights.

Would the “team” have agreed if they really knew what you had in mind? If they really understood the consequences?  If they realised they’d essentially be living under medical martial law for who knows how long? With 3 days turning into nearly 3 weeks+ this time?

I don’t think so. Not half of them. Not to mention that the idea of “flattening the curve” was offered with the understanding that of course lockdowns weren’t going to stop this virus.  Supposedly they would just slow it down – that’s what you told New Zealand. What changed?  Are coronaviruses now stopped by lockdowns?

Colds aren’t. The Flu isn’t. Neither is any other infectious disease. Yet we were told that COVID-19 was eliminated by New Zealand’s first lockdown. Amazing. Just like that.

A Severe lockdown complete with curfew hasn’t worked for Victoria in Australia as they continue to see cases. Also, some of the places around the world that locked down the hardest have had the highest number of cases.  Italy, New York City and the UK for example.

And the cases just keep popping up. All over the world and here in New Zealand (funnily enough) the more you test, the more cases you find and the more clusters.

More and more members of the New Zealand public have stopped buying into your COVID elimination or even suppression narrative/strategy. We have no deaths so far this time. If we do, it will likely be someone fragile enough to die from the regular flu or something else sadly. We’ve had close to the same number of deaths as with Swine flu overall. We have very few serious cases so far.

So to claim now that we are still saving lives in New Zealand is a farce.  And it’s falling flat when along with economic destruction, you’ve got animals nearly dying because farmers can’t get to them, and a possible looming food shortage created by poor oversight, a lack of comprehension of how society operates, and inept draconian policies that are never going to be 100% effective.

To say that COVID-19 couldn’t possibly have been circulating through the community after lockdown, because “no one went to the hospital” is as unscientific as it gets.  Especially based on the fact that there was hardly any testing and most New Zealanders thought COVID had been eliminated. if that was true then please explain to us, why the flu and colds weren’t eliminated too? They were rife after lockdown, but of course, no one thought they could have COVID.

You won’t listen to reason or common sense or science that doesn’t agree with lockdowns and isolation. I suppose it isn’t politically expedient to do so.  But when is it going to be enough?  When will you admit with grace, that you got it wrong? For the sake of New Zealand and New Zealanders.

I’m reminded of Shrek’s Lord Farquaad, the would-be king, grandiloquently  proclaiming, “Some of you may die, but it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.”  We are feeling needlessly sacrificed right now on on the altar of the government’s COVID Policy.
