Health Minister David Clark has been forced to apologise to PM Jacinda Ardern for thinking that the lockdown rules for exercise apply to everyone except himself.

He was caught out after driving his van to a park in order to go mountain biking.

He broke not one but two of the rules that everyone else in New Zealand have been told to follow by the government

  1. He didn’t do his exercise in his local neighbourhood leaving his home either on foot or on his bike.
  2. He chose an exercise activity that like fishing, swimming and surfing risks injury and potentially could put others at risk in order to rescue him.

The 6km mountain bike trail, dubbed “The Big Easy” was not challenging and was a popular local destination, Clark said.

“I know that now is not the time for people to be engaging in higher-risk exercise activities,” he said.

WELL DUH! For a Minister no less and a Health Minister at that, to be flouting the rules put in place for the protection of the heath of the population is unforgivable. Why is he still in the job?

Clark said the bike track was “not challenging” but in December 2018 a cyclist who suffered a shoulder injury in a fall had to be rescued by fire crews and ambulance staff.

The cyclist had to be carried down to the car park on a stretcher.

In October last year a young mountain biker was injured during the national schools championships at Signal Hill. The teenager had to be flown to Christchurch Hospital.
