George

It’s surprising how liberating Simon Bridges‘ refusal to work with NZ First feels. At last, the NZ voter will determine the next Government and not Winston Peters.

For years the electorate, and the country, have been held to ransom on the whim of one man. He has paraded his ‘King/Queen maker’ role as a divine intervention reserved exclusively for him. The Guru for the gullible, the Allah for the aliens and the God for the geriatrics.

I hope I have seen the last of him. His political career is littered with the carcasses of decent politicians who made the mistake of embracing him. He leaves a legacy of distrust. Some say he plays the game of politics to the extreme advantage of his party. That’s fine, but it has rarely been to the benefit of our country. It will be a great day for NZ if at the next election he and his cohorts disappear without a trace. Thanks Simon.

By contrast, the passing of Mike Moore saddens me. Although I have never considered Labour as a political option, Mike personified the virtues of ethics. He was a man I respected, simply because he was honest. He was a decent bloke. What you saw is what you got and that was a principled politician, a rare commodity indeed. Mike was Director-General of the World Trade Organization from 1999 to 2002 and became New Zealand’s ambassador to the US in 2010.

Could you possibly imagine our current PM being appointed to these roles? That is how far the standards of Labour’s leadership have fallen. He left school at fourteen, she has a degree in communication and yet you would be forgiven for thinking that the opposite qualifications were in play.
