Promise: Housing

“Housing is a top priority for this government. Action will be taken to address homelessness. State house sell offs will stop. And the State will take the lead in building affordable houses.  Through its Kiwibuild programme, this government pledges to build 100,000 high quality, affordable homes over the next 10 years; half of them in Auckland.”

Speech from the Throne

Broken promise:

Policy re-set. Expectations lowered. Minister removed. Barely responsible for delivering 250 extra dwellings to the private first homebuyer market since becoming the Government. Had bold targets, all of which have been dropped. Was also fact-checked by the NZ Herald when the PM claimed her Government had built 2200 state houses.  “MISLEADING: Yes, between November 1, 2017 and August 31 this year roughly 2200 state houses have been built, but roughly 30 per cent of those were already under construction when this Government took over and 16 per cent were already contracted by November 1, 2017.

Promise: Immigration

“To help ease pressures on our housing, infrastructure and public services, this government will make sure we get our immigration settings right.  It will cut down on low quality international education courses and will ensure work visas issued reflect genuine skill shortages.”

Speech from the Throne

Broken promise:

Tinkered with, but not delivered on promises made pre-election.

Promise: Housing

“This government will remove the Auckland urban growth boundary and free up density controls. New developments, both in Auckland and the rest of New Zealand, will be able to be funded through innovative new financing methods like infrastructure bonds.”

Speech from the Throne

Broken promise:

This hasn’t happened and in addition, the Auckland Council and Mayor are opposed to the idea.

Promise: 1080

“Investigate alternatives to 1080.”

Speech from the Throne

Partially Broken promise:

There has been a small allocation of funding for new traps from the Provincial Growth Fund, but thus far no new alternatives to 1080.
