There aren’t many days when I come up with a good idea and today may not be one of them either, but I have been thinking. We are all aware that as the election draws near the landscape becomes littered with ‘vote for me’ hoardings. The usual theme is a photo of the candidate, often resembling a youthful, smiling photoshopped version, bearing no resemblance to the likeness of the real character, and alongside this image, the candidate expounds his/her extraordinary talent at righting the wrongs of all the country’s woes. Very old school, unfortunately, fit only for vandalism. Things need to change.

My suggestion is for the use of the National Party exclusively. Instead of their local candidate’s photo appearing on the hoarding there should be a series of unflattering photos of current COL’s Ministers and alongside the photo a quote from their 2017 manifesto promises and then the actual outcome.

An example could be an earnest portrait of Ardern and alongside, the text from her speech from the throne. “To show the importance of the child poverty issue, the Prime Minister the Right Honourable Jacinda Ardern will take on the newly created role of Minister for Child Poverty Reduction.” Then beneath this, the results of her intervention. “70% increase in child poverty over the last three years”. The same for Twyford’s 100,000 houses promise and Genter’s zero road toll promise, etc, etc.

The BFD.

This would also be cost-efficient because, as we know, only socialists are vandals and they would not be drawn to defacing their beloved leaders. The socialists would be outraged which would be a good thing. The MSM couldn’t avoid the issue and would jump to defend the indefensible and the woke community would be seeking a safe place to mourn. National would be accused of “dirty politics” and playing the “man not the ball” which is fine by me. But best of all, these hoardings would be an honest and true reflection of the status quo.

A portrayal of Shane Jones, as a dog, lifting its leg and spraying all over Northland as he marks his territory with taxpayers’ revenue wouldn’t go astray either.
