I analyse Todd Muller, his team and the problems I can see for National that we have been able to glimpse from Muller’s first week on the job. Then I will explain why it is that we are about to see who’s been swimming with no togs on as the economic swimming pool gets drained.
[...] There will be many in the nations encompassed by the Five Eyes Alliance who take exception to these history lessons. They have no right to be offended, however, by the way such events linger in China’s memory. It was, after all, the so-called “Opium Wars” that marked the sudden and abject collapse of Chinese power.
[...] What the hell has social media done to us? It seems like almost overnight we’ve become a culture of snitches, bullies, witch-hunters and torch-and-pitchfork-carrying mobs. We lurch about in blind, unthinking rage and hunger, like a horde of zombies from The Walking Dead.
[...] Muller is responsible for allowing the news cycle to be dominated by a red hat instead of front-footing the economic recovery. When Nikki Kaye was questioned over the skin colour of National’s front bench she could have done worse than telling the journalist to bugger off. That would have given the falling National membership a glimmer of hope, instead of placing their heads in their hands while speculation over colonial bed-hopping drowned out economic catastrophe.
